The Leidos Military and Veterans Health Solutions Operation has an opening for a Research Scientist to join the Operational Readiness Directorate at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA.

This position will provide research support to the Operational Readiness Directorate and involves research on the mental and physical health of military personnel to improve military readiness, wellness, and quality of life. This work will include collaborating with other researchers in the Directorate, contributing to research project management and the implementation of longitudinal studies, conducting statistical analyses, and drafting scientific documents such as abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, and funding proposals.

This is a full-time position with a hybrid work schedule (eligible to work remote with a requirement to occasionally work on-site at the Naval Health Research Center). The number of days on-site may vary, and the telework schedule is subject to change based on program and customer requirements. Work hours will coincide with the standard command business hours of 0700-1630.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as a co-investigator on research studies focused on the physical and mental health of U.S. military personnel, including a longitudinal study that examines the long-term outcomes of service members injured on deployment.

  • Collaborate with epidemiologists, psychologists, data scientists, and statisticians on projects that utilize advanced research methods and machine learning.

  • Contribute to study administration tasks, such as the development and submission of IRB protocols.

  • Develop and design studies that are creative, innovative, relevant, and actionable in a military setting.

  • Utilize statistical programs (e.g., SAS, R) to conduct analyses across multiple integrated datasets.

  • Identify and apply appropriate statistical methods to evaluate data, interpret results, and identify clinical and military relevance.

  • Write and prepare scientific reports, manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations on research findings.

  • Review scientific reports, manuscripts, and other documents for accuracy in content, statistics, and data interpretation.

  • Assist in researching, preparing, and submitting research proposals for funding.

  • Supervise and mentor junior researchers.

  • Attend scientific meetings and present results and study findings to appropriate audiences.

  • Effectively communicate with team members and the government customer in performance of program efforts.

  • Work independently to achieve day-to-day objectives which impact operational results and project deliverables for the department.

  • Ensure tasks are completed on time for mission requirements.

  • Assist other staff with tasks as needed for customer mission.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • PhD in epidemiology, psychology or related field from an accredited college or university, and at least 2 years of related work experience.

  • Strong history of peer-reviewed publications and research funding.

  • Knowledge of military health issues, including physical injury, mental health, and health behaviors.

  • Expertise in statistical theory and methodology used in epidemiology, psychology, data science, and related fields.

  • Experience managing multiple research projects at once, and ability to reprioritize projects as necessary.

  • Understanding of methods and techniques of compiling, analyzing, and evaluating statistical and other research data for prospective and retrospective study designs.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment and manage research projects from conceptualization through completion.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; excellent problem-solving skills; and excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment; project management and coordination skills; ability to prioritize tasks; and effectively plan and prioritize work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hold an active Interim or Secret Security Clearance.

  • Previous experience in a military research environment.

Pay Range:Pay Range $81,250.00 - $146,875.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline onlyand not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
