Job Description

DEA is hiring a full time Junior Transportation Planner or Engineer to work on transportation related projects in our Smart Mobility practice. Responsibilities include multimodal data collection, technical analysis, transportation evaluation, and documentation of findings for a range technical and non-technical audiences. This position will support work in the Oregon Smart Mobility group in Portland and Salem, OR. Working from another DEA office may be considered.

Responsibilities will be diverse and include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting with multimodal operations analysis, corridor studies, traffic impact analysis, area transportation system plans, and urban growth area evaluation of land use and transportation.
  • Contributing to transportation planning evaluations using computer software techniques.
  • Multimodal data assembly and analysis, sometimes including fieldwork and site visits.
  • Complete data, geospatial and statistical analyses using programs such as Excel, GIS, SPSS, and R. Examples include pedestrian and bicyclist level of traffic stress, parking utilization/demand, multimodal origin-destination analysis, and estimating future vehicle, transit, pedestrian and bicycle demand.
  • Producing project deliverables, including written documentation, maps and graphics using programs such as MS Word, InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, SketchUp, Photoshop and ArcGIS Pro.
  • Supporting business development activities in the area of transportation planning, land use planning, urban design, transit planning, active transportation, and traffic operations.

General Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in a planning, engineering, or related field
  • Coursework in transportation planning, urban planning, multimodal transportation, or civil engineering
  • 0-3 year of professional experience
  • Strong oral communication and technical writing skills
  • Desire to work in the Transportation Planning and Transportation analysis field
  • Knowledge of transportation planning and traffic operations fundamentals

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of ArcMap/ArcPro (GIS), Microsoft Office, and/or Adobe Creative Suite is preferred
  • Knowledge or desire to learn safety evaluations tools such IHSDM and ISATe safety evaluation
  • Knowledge or desire to learn programming or scripting with programs like R or Python is desired
  • Knowledge or desire to learn transportation analysis software such as the Highway Capacity Software, Synchro, Sidra, tools
  • Master's degree in planning, engineering or related field

  • Anticipated salary range for this position is $65,000 - $85,000 and is based on applicable experience
