Instructional Assistant
PRIMARY SUMMARY: The Instructional Assistant (IA) assists the teacher in monitoring and implementing an appropriate and stimulating learning environment for all students in the Davidson School programs. The IA is a collaborative and contributing member of the education team to carry out each child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists teachers and/or clinicians in the implementation of students' Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals by assisting in the planning and preparation of instructional activities, preparing documents and technology, supervising the classroom in the absence of the teacher during the school day, assisting the teacher in developing lesson plans, and identifying areas for student success to maximize the organization and flow of the classroom
  • Observes and addresses behavioral, academic, social, and communication goals and objectives of students in the classroom according to approved procedures, monitors students during outdoor and outside the classroom activities, and reports progress regarding student performance and behaviors to the supervising teacher by remaining with students as assigned, collecting and reporting data, and maintaining line of sight supervision of students during assigned activities to foster the safest and most effective environment for student success
  • Encourages independence in students by allowing students to attempt all activities without assistance before providing an increasing level of support to allow students to develop their own school and work habits, independent of adult support
  • Demonstrates knowledge of child development, autism, developmental disabilities and learning styles by differentiating assignments and tasks to the appropriate developmental level of the assigned students to ensure comprehensive and effective skill development
  • Works directly with students in the school environment by assisting with academics, behavior management, communication, and activities of daily living to effectively help students make progress in all identified areas
  • Escorts students to/from activities and supervises students in educational areas, lunch, bus/activities, playgrounds, bathrooms, enrichment, transitional, clinical areas, and other assigned areas by walking with individuals or groups of students, maintaining line of sight supervision of students and student groups, and by ensuring that students are received by staff before discontinuing supervision to promote and maintain the safest and most secure environment for student
  • Participates and assists with supervision in all program projects and activities by attending enrichment and therapeutic classes, school assemblies, and field trips to maintain effective supervision of students and foster a safe, supervised environment
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and safe educational environment for students by following established health and safety guidelines, regularly assisting in classroom cleanup, reporting safety issues, and reporting common areas in need of attention to promote and maintain a healthy working environment
  • Assists in evacuating students during fire drills, emergencies, and any potential unusual circumstances by escorting and remaining with students during the event, following the direction of building leaders, and by maintaining supervision of assigned students to ensure the best possible level of drill and emergency response
  • Complies with Elwyn and Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) expectations regarding paraprofessional job duties and professional development by reviewing requirements and expectations annually to ensure that all procedural expectations are met
  • Inputs and accesses information via technology as requested by teachers and clinicians by checking and responding to emails on a daily basis and entering data for progress monitoring to ensure that student data is reported accurately when required
  • In the teacher's absence, performs tasks to support the daily operations of the classroom by completing daily organizational and assignment activities (reporting attendance, lunch counts, etc.) to ensure smooth operations of the classroom and optimal learning environment for students
  • Assists the classroom teacher in maintaining a uniform approach to classroom organization by maintaining posted schedules, procedures, and plans in order to maintain a fluid, structured, and recognizable environment
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and safe crisis management using agency-trained protocols by engaging in approved practices for CPR and crisis management to ensure the safest possible response to crisis situations
  • Maintains a safe campus environment by following all requested policies and procedures including, but not limited to, signing in and out in available program systems, informing campus security of any activities wherein students are outside of the school building perimeter, and securing all entry/exit doors as appropriate after use to provide the safest possible environment for students and staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School diploma or Graduate Equivalency Degree (GED)
  • Two (2) years of experience working with school-age students with disabilities
  • Non-profit human service experience highly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage and prioritize multiple, often competing, priorities
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated strong time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment with the ability to solve problems and make decisions with limited need for direct supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate future needed changes or identify problem areas and take effective actions
  • Must be able to perform CPR and crisis intervention using agency-trained protocols
  • Must possess excellent customer interaction, collaboration, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated basic experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of electronic record systems preferred
