Job Description:

The Instructional Designer will play a key role in the development and expansion of online and tech-enhanced teaching and learning at RVCC. This person will partner with faculty to develop and revise asynchronous online, remote synchronous, hybrid, and face-to-face courses that are student-centered, grounded in learning theory, and meet standards for universal design and accessibility. The person in this position will use their experience with Quality Matters, OLC, or similar rubrics to develop and deliver training materials and workshops that can help faculty integrate instructional design practices into their course design and teaching activities.

The Instructional Designer will provide end-user support and training to faculty members primarily in the usage of the learning management system (Canvas LMS), and secondarily in the usage of the video management system (Panopto), web conferencing software (Zoom, Teams), and various tech-based teaching and learning tools.

The Instructional Designer will assist in identifying emerging technologies that can improve the level of engagement and authentic interaction in online and face-to-face courses and partner with instructional technology peers to integrate new technologies into our systems and our teaching.

The Instructional Designer will serve as an advocate for online and tech-enhanced teaching and learning and will build strong partnerships across the institution.

Essential Duties:

Partner with faculty to assess, design, develop, evaluate, and re-assess effective and engaging learning experiences and course content for students in online and tech-enhanced face-to-face modalities.

Participate in a collaborative course review process, and provide recommendations for future iterations of course development.

Contribute to the design and delivery of online and hybrid teaching certification courses targeted to faculty participants.

Create and deliver training material for faculty in multiple delivery formats, including face-to-face workshops, online videos, and other methods as appropriate.

Provide support via phone, email, web-conference, and in-person to individual faculty members for course design, Canvas issues, and other educational technologies.

Work with Enrollment Services, Advising, and other student-facing RVCC offices to develop clear, straightforward orientations and other information for prospective online students.

Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in online teaching and learning, and partner with educational technologists and video and media professionals to expand the RVCC suite of technology teaching tools.

Participate in professional development activities that support personal and departmental growth.

Troubleshoot and provide LMS-support in conjunction with Academic Innovation and Digital Learning department members and Technology Services.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Media, Education, or related field.

Experience in the design and development of academic courses in multiple delivery formats, including online and blended/hybrid.

Experience in planning, teaching, and evaluating professional development workshops and information sessions.

Demonstrated knowledge of and professional experience with instructional design theory and practice.

Demonstrated experience working with faculty in a higher education setting.

Proficiency with at least one modern learning management system and experience with other common teaching & learning technologies.

Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically, both written and orally, with an appreciation for the diverse perspectives and people found in a college environment.

Professional experience using Microsoft Office Suite and Zoom.

Strong customer service orientation and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to find solutions even under occasionally stressful conditions.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative/team-based environment.

Strong and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Media, Education, or a related field; OR a Master's Degree in a teaching field with demonstrated experience or certification in Instructional Design.

Demonstrated experience with Quality Matters, OLC, or similar rubrics and course review processes.

Proficiency with the Canvas learning management system (LMS), preferably in the Administrator, Instructor, and Student roles.

Experience with other key instructional technologies and LMS integrations, including video management systems (preferably Panopto), LMS design (Cidi Labs DesignPLUS), course authoring software, or others.

Experience facilitating the creation of faculty course materials, including videos, podcasts, and participatory activities.

Experience providing end-user (Help Desk) support to a wide-range of audiences.

Experience and interest in piloting new teaching & learning technologies.

Higher Education teaching experience, preferably in the community college setting.
