Railroad & Transit Team

Burns provides design and construction solutions to help maintain, improve, and expand the nation's railroad and transit infrastructure. We have designed the implementation of critical programs across the country and support the renewed emphasis on a public transit-oriented lifestyle.

Burns is currently seeking a Designer to join our Railroad & Transit team in Washington, D.C.

Summary:

Performs non-routine and complex assignments, which include responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project with diverse designs. Develops solutions for large and highly complex engineering projects. Continues to develop technical expertise in discipline and may begin to specialize in niche technical areas. The Designer will spend the majority of their time developing technical expertise and supporting others. Must dispense knowledge to staff through mentoring or internal presentations. Provides the production of project drawings on-time, in budget with high technical quality and client satisfaction.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs field data collections and/or field system verification.
  • Responsible for knowledge of project specifications and requirements in review and adjustment process.
  • Assists in the studies and selection of equipment to fit the project design.
  • Performs system design layout and sizing for assigned projects.
  • Responsible to coordinate the design with other disciplines, attends design coordination meetings with team members and client representatives.
  • Assists in the development of drawings and sketches required to complete a project in a particular discipline.
  • Prepares electronically generated drawings with accuracy, neatness, and speed, maintaining high quality and uniform standards of lines and lettering.
  • Reviews shop drawings, record changes and keeps all disciplines informed of details and schedules.
  • Coordinates the contract documents with the construction personnel and participates (under supervision) in site inspections during construction as required.
  • Informs the Senior Designer and Engineer of technical challenges and any design work beyond his/her capabilities.
  • Communicates design issues and problems with the Project Manager or Senior Designers as needed.
  • May act as lead role over other designers and/or drafters.
  • Actively participates in professional organizations where the technical reputation and image of the firm may be enhanced.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities

Educations & Experience:

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or has 10 or more years of progressive drafting and design experience. Experience in infrastructure design, drawing development, specification development, and review of shop drawings and product data.
