Job Summary
The Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law invites applications for a non-tenure track/teaching faculty position in the Undergraduate Law program which launched in 2021. We seek innovative, accomplished teachers committed to the success of our highly diverse and deeply engaged student body. In only the second year of the program, we have almost 70 students majoring in Law as well as another 40 minors from fields across the University. Of our majors, 75% identify as women, 70% are students of color, over one-third are first-generation college students. Many come from low-income families, identify as members of the LGBTQ community, and/or are recent immigrants.
The Kline School of Law Undergraduate program is one of just a handful of U.S. law school to offer a bachelor's degree. The program provides undergraduates with rigorous, multidisciplinary foundations in legal rules along with critical, experiential, and law & society-informed perspectives on the way law shapes individuals, society, government, technology, and industry. Building on Drexel's nationally-known co-operative education program, the Undergrad Law program integrates experiential learning opportunities into academic courses: from visits to courthouses and law firms to introducing students to practical aspects of legal work such as client interviewing and trauma-informed practice.
We seek candidates who hold a PhD and/or JD or the equivalent who can demonstrate excellence in teaching and excitement about building an interdisciplinary, student-centered undergraduate program. Drexel and Kline Law are committed to recruiting, developing, retaining, and rewarding faculty members who bring scholarly interests and life experiences that contribute to the diversity and success of our students, our University, and our communities. We are especially excited to hear from faculty who integrate current scholarship into their teaching and are eager to develop new courses that introduce students to the breadth of legal scholarship and careers.
Teaching responsibilities will include a mix of required courses in the Undergraduate program as well as the opportunity to develop upper-level electives based on the candidate's areas of interest. Occasional teaching in the JD program is also possible. Faculty are expected to teach a total of 6 courses (which will include multiple sections of the same courses) over three 10-week quarters each year. Core courses we are looking to cover include:
Course descriptions for these and other courses in the program can be found here. PhD field and areas of specialization are open, though we are particularly interested in candidates who can develop courses in areas such as immigration, health/disability, research methods, or public policy in ways that broaden our curricular offerings and strengthen collaborations across the University.
This is a non-tenure track position; time spent in the position will not accrue toward tenure. The contract is initially for two years with the goal to reappoint if mutually satisfactory. While faculty are expected to be focused on teaching and service in the Undergraduate Law program, teaching faculty receive professional development funds which can be used for conference or research support, and participate fully in the intellectual and social life of the Law School.
