About the division/team: Global Health Program/Maternal, Newborn, Child Health & Nutrition (MNCHN)

The goal of PATH's Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) Program is to apply effective, innovative approaches to broadening access to and use of key MNCHN interventions that address the most pressing causes of maternal, newborn and child deaths, and poor nutritional status. Our approach includes: an emphasis on community-level action; a focus on improving the quality of existing health services, improving preventive and curative care across the continuum of care from facility to community level; a commitment to reaching underserved communities; a focus on working to understand and address barriers to high-quality care; and mobilization of social and political support to create and sustain an enabling environment for service delivery of key evidence-based interventions. Where appropriate, the MNCHN Program strives to establish public-private partnerships to advance our goals.

Description of the project the intern will complete:

The Newborn Health Intern will support the activities on the 'Lessons Learned in Establishing Neonatal Care Units' project. This project seeks to detail the successes and barriers in the optimal scale up of newborn care for sick and small newborns globally.

Proposed activities and outcomes for the internship:

The Newborn Health Intern will support the activities on the neonatal care project, including the following:

• Literature and guideline compilation and review on details related to scaling up newborn units/care within specified geographies (i.e. India, Rwanda, Malawi, Ethiopia)
• Summarize key findings from comparative review
• Case study preparation, including designing semi-structured surveys for key informant interviews
• Supporting the planning and hosting of virtual meetings for engaging key partners and dissemination of key findings

Description of the learning objectives and goals of the internship:

• To refine literature review and research skills, writing and summary skills, preparation of presentations, and develop team-building skills for working across international settings in global health.
• To more deeply understand newborn care in a variety of international settings.

Benefit to the intern:

Intern will gain experience working across settings in a fast-paced environment in the global health setting. Intern will gain in-depth understanding of the newborn care support available globally.

How will performance be evaluated?

Intern will have frequent check-ins with the project team and will present on progress. Final evaluation will be provided at the end of the internship term.

Description of skills and experience the intern should have:

• Previous experience with newborn health (preferred)
• Strong writing skills
• Previous qualitative research experience
• Strong organization and able to work independently.
