The Office of General Counsel ("OGC"), the legal department of the American Medical Association, recruits law students enrolled in American Bar Association accredited law schools to clerk at the AMA Headquarters in Chicago during the summer academic semester. We no longer accept interns for the fall or spring semester.
Interns will provide support to OGC attorneys by conducting primary research of case law and literature, preparing memoranda on various issues, assisting in drafting and analyzing a variety of contracts and matters, and providing general support on ongoing OGC projects and initiatives. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend the AMA's Annual Meeting in June to observe the formal proceedings and discussion on policy, governance, social and health care issues on a national platform, with special focus on how OGC attorneys support the proceedings.
Subject matters will include corporate law, non-profit matters, intellectual property, licensing, promotions, health law, data security and privacy - all within the context of an in-house legal department supporting the AMA mission.
Law students in their second or third year, or students who are pursuing advanced legal degrees, are preferred. Applications from students seeking academic credit as well applications from students not seeking credit are encouraged to apply. Generally, the OGC accepts two interns. Summer internships are full-time, and the position includes a stipend. To apply, candidates should electronically submit a single page resume, cover letter articulating your interest in the AMA, unofficial transcripts/law school GPA to date, and a writing sample to the attention of:
